as i have been harping on about wanting to ‘transition’ into the media industry ad nauseum the past few months i figured it was time to finally watch altman’s the player.
my high-school geography teacher paul o’fflyn made me watch the excellent opening shot over 15 years ago- 8 uninterrupted minutes with dialog references to annoying mtv-style incessant cutting and welles’ and hitchcock’s famously long shots set the scene for a movie about movies that constantly reminds you that you’re watching a movie.
light, funny, smart, self-reflexive. really enjoyable. a very hollywood satire on hollywood. still more commerce than art, but i can live with intelligent commerce.
