one of my favorite parts of having my sister come and visit me in cairo is our quality car talk time when stuck in traffic (or whenever we go out in cairo). nile fm – egypt’s only english fm radio station – is almost always playing, and we are always poking fun, talking back to the radio presenters. the ‘after dark‘ relationship-advice program is especially prime fodder for our interjections and we have often asked each other who this marwa rakha person was and what qualified her to be giving (often terrible) relationship advice on the radio.

well thanks to the berkman center’s weekly buzz email that linked through to marwa’s piece in global voices on the recent sexual harassment court case in egypt i now know the who and why on marwa who is much more impressive online than on the radio – in english at least.

i must concede though that marwa who was, until recently (and rather acrimoniously) quitting, a presenter on otv, sounds a lot better on the radio in arabic, like when she discussed the topic of virginity amongst women in egypt recommended if you speak arabic: marwa rakha on virginity in egypt
