The Marion von Osten Selection
Marion von Osten, Her Last Performance, 2008, 3 min.
Daniel Schmid, Tosca’s Kiss, 1984, 87 min.
For Lapdogs, von Osten has engaged with the work of Swiss filmmaker Daniel Schmid in the form of screenings and lectures. The film Tosca’s Kiss addresses the “Casa Verdi”, the first nursing home for retired opera singers, founded by composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1896. In a film that developed a cult following over the years, Schmid captured a world in which the singers – many of whom had significant onstage careers – re-live and re-enact their triumphant roles of the glorious past. For Cairo, von Osten conducted a study of Verdi’s Aida and its historical Cairo references in the light of the Casa Verdi, and offers a short film by way of an introduction.

The Curatorial Selection
Hito Steyerl, November, 2004, 25 min.
Michele di Menna, Giving it Back, 2006, 8 min.

San Keller’s program cannot be screened – he had asked for a list of films at which the curators had recently wept. Haq and Zolghadr don’t cry at the movies.
