weeks ago i caught the tail end of the masala movement party at the goethe institute in dokki.
not sure exactly what it is the group does, their manifesto:
It is Masala Movement’s ambition to create a sustainable platform that allows artists from all regions to live and express their intercultural competency, passionate professionalism and healthy idealism to the fullest extent.
the party was almost over by the time i arrived (having gotten seriously lost as usual), the live graf was pretty much done and it looked really stunning on the gorgeous old buildings (i am obsessed with the colonial embassy villas in cairo). there was some generic hip hop and scratching etc and some ill breakers. very similar to the xmas at the carpark party in dubai a few years ago.
one of the striking differences between the cultural scene here in cairo and the fledgling dubai scene is how most of the cairo action is funded and organized by official local and foreign institutions. dubai is the polar opposite, there’s practically no government or official support in the cultural realm which means most of the events and happenings there involve commercial sponsorship or someone trying to sell you something. the cairo vibe is much more laid back in comparison. in both cases, for very different reasons, the audience is often mainly foreign.
