short review of another ciff08 film worth seeking out.
goran markovic‘ turneja tells the story of a belgrade theater company past its prime. the actors are playing poker instead of rehearsing when they are offered hard currency to tour the bosnian war’s frontlines. the troupe is assured it’s completely safe. as their military bus evades bombs on their way to the first city it becomes clear it’s anything but.
the film is a hilarious, twisted comedic take on the madness, absurdities and pointlessness of war in general and the bosnian one in particular (we visit serbs, croats and muslims – all interchangeable - along the tour). superb performances all round. markovic is a man to watch.
unfortunately the good folks at nile city cinema started the film 45 minutes late which meant i had to leave early missing the ending. highly recommended.
one for the kusturica fans.
