finally kicked off the baladi bar hop last night, starting at the sadly missable frankenstein adham hafez dance performance at townhouse.

stella bar was awesome. full of customers who seemed like they had been there almost as long as the bar or at the very least since opening time with a few requiring support when swaying to and from the (tiny!) bathroom. guys behind us had brought their own mini cellphone powered soundsystem blaring out tinny pet shop boys tunes. there were no ladies when we arrived but by leaving time there was an intriguing table of fur wearing eastern european cuties sitting with barely legal, good looking and very attentive if slightly nervous egyptian boys (financially lubricated first-times?) and a token trendy european couple. cheese (more like salt with a bit of cheese thrown in) + tomato and VAT20 brandy ordered alongside stellas of course.
el-horreya was rammed and super-buzzing. a mix of downtown hipsters and chess playing / newspaper reading locals. there weren’t any tables so we didn’t linger though we had already made a number of new friends during our brief table search.
lotus inn was the find of the night for me. gorgeous space on the 7th floor of the hotel (make sure you get in the hotel elevators getting up) but you’ll need to bring the party with you.
there were two guys in the charmingly depressing carol sitting alone nursing beers.
we ended up refueling – food and shisha – at le grillon which was full of mafia types we were helpfully told on one of the frequent bathroom visits!

we ended the night gate-crashing a classy house party in a glamorous straight out of belle epoque era garden city apartment overlooking the british embassy and nile. after a spirited discussion of people’s music choices for their weddings’ first dance and funerals (and a best house track of all time aside) the bougie conversation lagged and i turned to wandering which piece of furniture i would choose to steal.
