i was pleased to see that the graffiti is still up at the goethe institute in dokki while there monday night for an outdoor screening of hans-christian schmid‘s requiem.

it’s part of the goethe institute film program that runs until may 10 and which is worth attending for the gorgeous setting alone!
requiem was a ninety minute excursion into and around the mental spaces beyond the reach of science and religion. it’s based loosely on a true story of a german woman suffering form mental illness who died in the 70s after a series of presumably unsuccessful exorcisms.
hans-christian schmid frames the story in understated naturalistic tones, tight, shaky close-ups and a sensitivity towards his characters (esp of leading actress sandra huller who is fantastic as is the whole cast), that successfully takes you down the (out-of) mind-route that ultimately leads to the death from exhaustion at the end of the film.
highly recommended (it plays in alexandria in a few days).
