Featuring:
DAM
Hasan Salaam
Shadia Mansour
Lowkey
Mazzi

From Palestine to NY to the UK, this panel and performance will address the power of conscious hip-hop and hip-hop as a social movement.

How is/can hip-hop be used as a tool to mobilize, empower and raise awareness on the struggles of oppressed people? How powerful is hip-hop as a means of advocacy: speaking out against war, genocide, conditions in the ghetto and the life of poverty? How can this powerful art form transcend boundaries, break down walls and stereotypes, and provide understanding among marginalized communities throughout the globe? Does the rise of hip-hop among marginalized groups internationally demonstrate an important trend?

Hip-Hop emerged as an innovating artistic form in the late 1970s in New York City. Historically, it has been a way for marginalized communities, specifically Blacks and Latinos, to express the struggles of their people and to highlight local problems to a global scale. Now there is a growing hip-hop movement amongst Arabs, both domestically and internationally, who use it as a means to express the struggles of their people. This panel will discuss the importance of this global dialogue and how it can be used as a space for unheard voices to be recognized.

PERFORMANCES WILL FOLLOW THE PANEL

**Entrance fee: $5

Sponsored by the Arab Student Association at SIPA, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, TURATH, LUCHA, MSA, the Black and Latino Student Caucus, International Socialist Organization, and NYU Students for Justice in Palestine.

i just got home from an inspiring paul romer talk on charter cities at columbia where he built on the ideas in the ted talk above.

during the post-talk q+a romer was asked whether his idea for charter cities could somehow be a part of the resolution to the israel / palestine question. he hesitantly and carefully responded that it was possible. although the middle east was not a part of the world he though about when developing these ideas he has recently been asked by a businessman who grew up in the west bank to carry out some research on the idea. romer did elaborate briefly on the two schools of thought: on the one hand giving young, unemployed populations options for economic empowerment in well-governed cities could possible go along way towards ridding the region of violence. on the other some say the geographic entrapment is a central part of a resistance to the encroachment of other peoples.
a few years ago in a setting of young egyptian professionals i threw the idea out of handing over the for the most part unoccupied sinai to palestinians and leaving (greater israel) to the israelis. the response was predictable vehemently opposed. but as i dragged the conversation out, the initial reactions gave way to more measured, and i would say rational, responses that grew more agreeable, with a few even changing sides.
tonight there was talk of dubai in someways being a not quite fully formed proto-charter city as well thought experiments of abu dhabi funding these charter cities around the world with governance perhaps partly designed by scandinavian countries and immigration opened up to the developing world.
it’s a fascinating and inspiring idea for continuing our already impressive progress on improving and sharing economic development as widely as possible. and an intriguing idea for escaping the current middle east peace gridlock.

i am becoming increasingly moved and passionate about the need for arab voices in support of israel and for fresh thinking that will address the palestinians’ economic and political stranglehold.
Winner of the Silver Lion for best director at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, Shirin Neshat’s feature-film debut represents an assured shift from the gallery-based moving images for which she is known, to the grand screen of the cinema. Devotees of Neshat’s earlier work will recognize her signature visual virtuosity and narrative grace in the story of four women in early 1950s Iran, played by Pegah Ferydoni, Arita Shahrzad, Shabnam Tolouei, and Orsi Toth. Then as now, the ambitions and actions of these women from across the spectrum of Iranian society inform and affect the course of events—public, private, and often political. With history as a backdrop, and imagination extending the limits of lives lived under oppressive conditions, Neshat offers an exquisitely framed window onto these women’s world. An Indiepix release.

Directed by Nader T. Homayoun
A man holds a sickly child in his arms, begging for money from passersby with a tale of how his wife has recently died and he desperately needs help. We soon learn the man is Ibrahim, a recent arrival in the big city, and that the child isn’t really his—the boy’s actually rented from a local gang-lord to make Ibrahim a more effective beggar. Welcome to Tehroun, as Iranians call their capital city.
Nader Homayoun’s debut feature presents a searing portrait of the city’s hidden, seamier side, a world of child trafficking, smuggling of just about anything, and assorted other criminal activities. A sensation in the Critics’ Week at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it won the audience award, Tehroun marks a new chapter in the fascinating evolution of Iranian cinema.

Directed by Dima El-Horr
A stunning first scene immediately establishes the highly charged atmosphere in Dima El-Horr’s carefully controlled first feature, filled with absurd moments and symbolic gestures. Three women (Hiam Abbass, Manal Khader, Raïa Haïdar) with very different motives board a bus on the Lebanese Day of Liberation to visit their husbands in jail. When the bus is stopped short by a stray bullet, the women are left to find their own way in the hot sun through mountains full of mines, amid sounds of muffled explosions, throngs of refugees, and rumors of massacres. Their perilous journey becomes an internal one towards liberation, as individual life and collective memory blend, and the personal and political are blurred.

Alwan for the Arts and 3rd i Collaborative Monthly Series Present:
Stolen Kisses (Kobolat Masroqah) by Khaled El Hagar, 2009, 120 min, 35 mm, Egypt, drama in Arabic with English subtitles.

A strong portrayal of nine Egyptians in their twenties, director Khaled El Hagar sketches a picture of modern Cairo by focusing on themes such as family conflicts, unemployment, sexual frustration, prostitution and violence.
The film, known for its bold, steamy scenes that strayed away from the lines of “Clean Cinema”, narrates the stories of several couples: Ahmed Azmy and Yousra El Lozy who love each other but cannot get married lawfully because of the vast class differences between them; the relationship between Farah Yousef and Basem Samra that is frustrated by Farah’s ambition for a more luxurious life, and Randa El Beheiry and Mohamed Karim, who strive to make a living and keep the balance in their relationship.
Socio-economic woes place enormous pressures on each character, affecting their relationships and ultimately leading to catastrophic actions including betrayal, murder, and false accusations.
This film series is supported in part by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
